Welcome to PTBi East Africa Preterm Birth Initiative

UCSF University of California San Francisco

The UCSF Preterm Birth Initiative (PTBi) is a program funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) and Lynne and Marc Benioff. The initiative aims to reduce the global burden of preterm birth, which is the leading cause of death for newborns and children under five.

PTBi East Africa engages in implementation, implementation science, and discovery projects to benefit populations in Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda. In Uganda and Kenya, the project tests the impact of implementing an intervention package for improved intrapartum and immediate postnatal care. In Rwanda, the project seeks to evaluate the effect of a group antenatal model of care on birth outcomes. We use both evidence-informed facility-based interventions and novel approaches that are carefully adapted to the local context, planned and implemented with local stakeholders, and rigorously measured and evaluated.
